An alternative to low voltage lighting are solar lights. Solar landscape lighting stores energy captured during the day and then when it becomes dark enough, the outside lighting switches on automatically and stay on all night until they run out of battery power. A very good point is that solar lighting dose not use any wiring or external power source Unfortunately the disadvantages of solar lighting is that they give out very low levels of lighting and this gets dimmer as the night goes on.Once the design and type of outdoor lighting fixture is selected, the next important question is voltage. Outdoor light fixtures are available in either 12-volt or 120-volt versions and for houses the best deal is low voltage outdoor lighting. These are easier to install as the system runs on harmless 12-volt current with light weight wiring laid on the ground or buried just below surface. The 120-volt system on other hand is same as used in interior of house and requires precautions and handling. The advantage of high voltage outdoor lighting is that it is permanent using buried conduit whereas the low voltage outdoor lighting is that is easily damaged due to superficial placement of wires.
Solar lighting does not require an external power supply so they are easy on the environment. You can use solar lighting just about anywhere even remote areas or near water. They require no wiring and you can move them around as you see fit. You will begin to see a reduction in your electric bill as you enjoy your solar lights in places you would have normally used regular lighting. The best advantage- they run cost free!

Another element adding to the "old world charm" of New Orleans gas lanterns is the use of traditional materials such as copper. Copper is historically the material of choice for an outdoor gas lantern. It is a tough, durable metal that can withstand the natural elements and ages gracefully the longer it is left outdoors.
